KUALA LUMPUR — The English Education Study Program of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Christian University of Indonesia Toraja (UKI Toraja), has successfully presented a scientific paper at Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on April 30, 2026. The academic presentation formed part of the study program’s commitment to strengthening international scholarly engagement, expanding academic networks, and contributing to the development of English language education research in a global context.

The paper, entitled “EFL Classroom Through a High-Context Cultural Lens,” examined English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom practices by placing culture, communication patterns, and contextual meaning at the center of pedagogical analysis. The presentation emphasized that EFL classrooms cannot be understood solely as linguistic spaces, but must also be interpreted as culturally situated environments in which teachers and students construct meaning through interaction, shared values, social norms, and contextual expectations.

Through the lens of high-context culture, the paper highlighted how indirect communication, relational sensitivity, collective values, respect for authority, and implicit classroom expectations may influence student participation, teacher-student interaction, classroom discourse, and the negotiation of meaning in EFL learning. This perspective provided an academic contribution to discussions on culturally responsive pedagogy, particularly in contexts where English language learning intersects with local cultural identities and community-based educational values.

The scientific presentation was delivered by a team of lecturers and academic members consisting of Dr. Markus Deli Girik Allo, M.Pd.; Dr. Roni La’biran, M.Pd.; Judith Ratu Tandi Arrang, M.Pd.; Shilfani, M.Pd.; and Lisa Puspitha Sari Paembonan, S.Pd.Gr. Their participation represented a collective institutional effort to advance research-based academic contributions and to position the English Education Study Program of UKI Toraja within wider international scholarly conversations.

In the presentation, the team underlined the importance of understanding EFL classrooms as social and cultural spaces. The study argued that language teaching should be responsive not only to curriculum demands and linguistic competence, but also to the cultural background of learners, the communicative traditions of local communities, and the social realities that shape classroom behavior. Such an approach is particularly relevant for English language education in multilingual and multicultural societies.

The participation of the English Education Study Program at Universiti Malaya also marked an important step in strengthening academic exchange between higher education institutions in Southeast Asia. The event opened opportunities for future collaboration in teaching, research, publication, lecturer and student mobility, and community service. It also reinforced the importance of cross-border academic dialogue in responding to contemporary issues in language education, teacher preparation, and culturally grounded pedagogy.

The academic engagement was also strengthened by the presence and support of Universiti Malaya leaders and institutional representatives, including Prof. Dr. Yvonne Lim Ai Lia, Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International); Prof. Ir. Dr. Nik Nazri Nik Ghazali, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering; Prof. Dr. Ahmad Zabidi Abdul Razak, Dean of the Faculty of Education; Assoc. Sr. Dr. Saipol Bari Abd Karim, Director of the Alumni Engagement Centre; Dr. Zuliana Razali, Director of the International Relations Centre; Ms. Nur Efarina Aznan, Short-Term Inbound Programme Coordinator at the Global Mobility Centre; and Mr. Muhamad Khairul Anuar Monday, Partnership Manager at the International Relations Centre. Their involvement reflected Universiti Malaya’s strong commitment to international academic collaboration, institutional partnership, and global mobility initiatives.

By presenting a scientific paper at one of Malaysia’s leading universities, the English Education Study Program of UKI Toraja demonstrated its continuing commitment to academic excellence, research development, and internationalization. The activity is expected to enhance the study program’s academic visibility while also encouraging further scholarly productivity among lecturers, students, and institutional partners.

This international academic achievement is consistent with the vision of the English Education Study Program to produce excellent graduates in English language teaching. The program is grounded in a social constructivist approach, supported by the principles of Systemic Functional Linguistics, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a strong character of service. These foundations continue to guide the study program in preparing future English educators who are intellectually competent, culturally aware, professionally adaptive, and committed to serving society through education.

The successful presentation at Universiti Malaya reflected UKI Toraja’s active role in promoting research, academic collaboration, and global networking. It also affirmed the English Education Study Program’s contribution to the broader development of English language teaching scholarship, particularly in relation to culturally responsive and context-sensitive approaches to EFL education.
